The project aims to determine the prognostic value of molecules in the tumor microenvironment in melanoma. A project led by Dr. Sònia Segura, attending physician in the Dermatology Department at Hospital del Mar and researcher in the Dermatological Inflammatory and Neoplastic Diseases Research Group at the Hospital del Mar Research Institute, has received one of the Jané Mateu Foundation grants in its third edition. The award ceremony took place on June 25 at the modernist site of Hospital de Sant Pau. The study aims to determine the prognostic value of molecules in the tumor microenvironment in melanoma, specifically a marker related to activation of the TGF-beta pathway, which is associated with the disease's ability to evade the immune system.

The first collaboration day between the Hospital del Mar Research Institute and the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) was held today at the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park (PRBB). The meeting provided an opportunity to share research projects, identify areas for collaboration and formalise a strategic alliance through the signing of a collaboration agreement between the Hospital del Mar and the Hospital del Mar Research Institute and IBEC.

On October 5 from 10:00 to 14:30 h comes a new edition of the Open Day of the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park (PRBB) in which researchers will explain firsthand what they do, how they do it and where they do it. The different research centers that are part of the PRBB will offer a wide range of free activities for the whole family. On Saturday morning, visitors will be able to learn about science from its protagonists with guided tours. We have prepared several routes that will simultaneously tour the building and visit different laboratories. This year, as a novelty, visitors will be able to choose the route beforehand. In addition, there will be two routes with special themes, two routes available in English and a historical route to learn about the history of the PRBB and its infrastructure.

Every year, on the last Friday of September, more than 300 cities in 30 European countries celebrate the European Researcher's Night, a scientific dissemination project promoted by the Horizon Europe program of the European Union. Although this year's Research Night is on September 27, the activities will take place until October 1. This initiative aims to bring research, innovation and its protagonists to the public in a simple and fun way. Thus, all kinds of public, from schools, families and children to young people or adults of all ages, can learn about and participate in the science of their territory through various activities such as workshops, lectures, shows, experiments, astronomical observations and games.

From March 4 to May 13, 2024, will take place in different libraries of Barcelona the cycle "What do we know about heart diseases", organized by Hospital del Mar Research Institute and the Network of Libraries of Barcelona. This is a cycle that is part of the "Visions of Science" project that the Barcelona Libraries have been carrying out for years, and that for the fourth year has been entrusted to the Hospital del Mar Research Institute thanks to the success obtained in previous editions.

As some of you already know, this year the IMIM (now the Hospital del Mar Research Institute) is 75 years old. To commemorate this anniversary, different activities have been programmed, such as the exhibition on the history of the institution that could be visited in the Paseo Marítimo this summer. Continuing with the celebrations, the Scientific Retreat 2023 will take place on 8 November in the PRBB Auditorium. In this edition, in addition to the usual scientific presentations, the event will include the participation of the former directors of the institution, in a round table moderated by Jessica Mouzo, journalist specialised in health and science of the newspaper "El País".

The meeting, a success in terms of participation with more than 120 registered participants, has served to analyze the activity of the program and the strategic lines of growth. The Cancer Research Program of the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute held its annual meeting this morning, during which the main lines of the program were analyzed and the main challenges for the future were discussed. The initiative has been a success, with more than 120 people registered in the Josep Marull Room.

Research into immunotherapy for cancer at the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute has received a new boost thanks to a donation of 43,250 euros from the Amics de l’Hospital del Mar Foundation. The president of the Amics de l’Hospital del Mar Foundation, Xavier Trias, presented the cheque to the young researchers Marta Bort, Laura Ibáñez and Iván Pérez, on behalf of the research team looking into the Role of Interferon-Gamma in T cell-mediated elimination of breast cancer tumour cells, a project selected through the internal call for proposals "immunotherapy seed". This initiative is aimed at studying, through a proof of concept, some of the molecular mechanisms used by tumour cells to resist immunotherapy, with the goal of improving breast cancer treatments.

After two years of pandemic next October 8th from 10:00 to 14:30h comes a new edition of the OpenPRBB to see and hear the science first hand. The different research centers of the PRBB will offer a wide range of free activities for the whole family. On Saturday morning, children over 12 years old will be able to learn about science from its protagonists with guided tours. From 10:00 to 13:30h we have prepared several routes that will simultaneously tour the building and visit different laboratories. In the case of the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute (IMIM-Hospital del Mar) you will be able to visit the Clinical Trials Unit, the molecular cancer therapy, stem cell and cancer, critical pathology laboratories, the Neurovascular research group and the Biobank where each of them will explain what their work consists of and the research they are currently carrying out.

Research and knowledge take to the streets again with the 15th Science Festival organized by the Barcelona City Council. Next May 28th and 29th 200 activities, 27 different spaces and more than 150 entities of the city related to science and outreach are waiting for you in the Rambla del Raval. In this sense, the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute (IMIM) invites you to the debate on "Animal Experimentation in Science" that organizes and that will take place on Saturday May 28 at 20:00h. The participants of the debate will be: Arnau Busquets: moderator and researcher with animal models at the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute (IMIM-Hospital del Mar). Sergi Vila: member of the Agreement on transparency in animal experimentation COSCE (Confederation of Spanish Scientific Societies). Domingo Gargallo: co-founder and vice-president of REMA (Spanish Network for the Development of Alternative Methods in Animal Experimentation).
