Research in the field of frailty and kidney transplantation, led by the Nephrology and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Departments at Hospital del Mar and researchers from the Hospital del Mar Research Institute, has received the Nephrology Research Award at the Íñigo Álvarez de Toledo Awards for Nephrology Research, presented by the Spanish Kidney Foundation. The award jury, made up of 22 experts in nephrology, research and business, granted two awards: one for nephrology and another for nephrology nursing, which, in this edition, was shared by two projects.

The Pharmacokinetics and Pharmacodynamics (PK/PD) Research Team at Hospital del Mar has received a competitive international grant awarded by the pharmaceutical company Pfizer, as part of the "Independent Research Grant Program - Pharmacokinetics-pharmacodynamics (PK/PD) of Aztreonam-Avibactam (ATM-AVI) in Special Populations." The selected project, chosen among proposals from several European centers, aims to optimize the use of the new antibiotic aztreonam-avibactam in patients with renal impairment - a population particularly vulnerable to severe infections caused by multidrug-resistant bacteria. The project is led by Dr. Mila Montero and Dr. Sònia Luque.

The Hemodynamics Unit of the Cardiology Department at Hospital del Mar took part in a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine. The study demonstrates that one month after undergoing treatment for a myocardial infarction, patients can safely continue therapy with a single antiplatelet drug without added risk.

Dr. Alicia Prieto, researcher at the Heart Disease Research Group of the Hospital del Mar Research Institute of Barcelona (HMRIB) and cardiologist at Hospital del Mar, has been awarded one of the three Daniel Bravo Foundation Fellowships to carry out advanced research in cardiology at leading international centers, including the Institut Universitaire de Cardiologie et de Pneumologie de Québec (IUCPQ).

Hospital del Mar and its research institute are part of this project, which aims to develop nanophotonic sensors for the diagnosis and clinical management of bacterial infections at the point of care. On February 14, Hospital del Mar hosted the fourth follow-up meeting of the PHITBAC project. This initiative is driven by a consortium with public and private participation to develop rapid tests for the swift detection of bacteria, their antibiotic resistance, and antibiotic levels in the blood, all based on nanophotonics. Rapid diagnosis of microorganisms that cause severe infections remains an unresolved challenge in infectious disease management, and immediate bedside monitoring of antibiotic levels in severe infections is an unmet need.

Dr. Joaquim Gea, Emeritus Head of the Pulmonology Department and researcher at the Hospital del Mar Research Institute, has been appointed as the coordinator of two special issues of the journals Cells and International Journal of Molecular Science. His role will involve selecting both the topics and the authors of the articles to be featured in these issues.

Dr. Albert Goday, emeritus section head of the Endocrinology and Nutrition Department at Hospital del Mar, researcher at its research institute, and associate professor of Medicine at UPF, has been appointed president of the Advisory Council on Diabetes in Catalonia. This council's role is to provide guidance to the government on diabetes, and it includes endocrinologists, family doctors, nurses, as well as patients and representatives from patient associations.

The Tatiana Foundation Prize for Young Researchers, awarded by the Spanish Society of Neurosciences, aims to identify and support the future leaders of Spanish neuroscience research. Valero, coordinator of the Neural Computation Laboratory at the Hospital del Mar Research Institute, has made extraordinary discoveries that have changed the way neuroscientists think about how local neural microcircuits represent spatial information. The award will be presented next September at the XI World Congress of the International Brain Research Organization (IBRO) to be held in Granada and organized by the Spanish Society of Neurosciences.
