  • Integrated prevention research model

Within the programme, we conduct research using systemic approaches that integrate: a) genetic data; b) omics; c) behavioural and lifestyle determinants; d) environmental determinants; and e) social contexts, with the aim of understanding the multi-scale interactions that may determine health promotion and the prevention of disease and disability.

The programme is characterised by the constant innovation and updating of research methods with the aim of increasing the impact of research on measurable improvements in population health. This includes the analysis of secular trends, the evaluation of the effectiveness of screening strategies, and the follow-up of survival as well as the monitoring of the incidence and prevalence of conditions such as myocardial infarction and mental health disorders. The programme also incorporates economic evaluation (efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and social return of interventions), thereby reinforcing sustainable and evidence-based prevention.

  • Scientific output

Over the last 5 years, the programme's groups have produced more than 100 indexed publications in the first decile or quartile each year. Researchers in the programme have been included among Clarivate Analytics' "Highly Cited Researchers in the World" and in the "World's Top 2% Scientists" list (Stanford University). Overall, the programme's research groups have secured funding for an average of 15 new competitive projects per year and have supervised an average of 7 doctoral theses annually.

  • Teaching and training

The members of the programme are highly involved in teaching activities in undergraduate, postgraduate, and specialist training programmes for medical, psychology, and nursing residents (MIR, PIR, EIR), mainly at Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF). We play a particularly prominent role in the Master's Degree in Public Health and in the specialist medical training programme in Preventive Medicine and Public Health, both of which attract international talent. Academic year 2025-26 marks the 25th edition of the master's programme, which has steadily consolidated over time and has received several recognitions in recent years, such as being considered one of the best master's degrees in public health at national level, as well as AQU accreditation in the additional dimension of internationalisation and interaction between teaching and research. The programme's success is also reflected in the master's position in the Shanghai Ranking, in which UPF's public health area has been ranked between 19th and 25th in the world.
