The urgent need to find treatments for a large number of degenerative diseases has led a group of experts to develop a guide designed to accelerate new drug discoveries for neurological and psychiatric diseases. Project leads are Dr. Silvia Zaragoza Domingo, consultant and founder of Neuropsynchro, Barcelona, serving as coordinator collaborating with Drs. Jordi Alonso and Montserrat Ferrer, Institut Hospital del Mar d'Investigacions Mèdiques (IMIM) and CIBERESP, and Dr. Manuel de Gracia, Facultat de Psicologia of Universitat de Girona (UdG). This guide was presented during the 34th Congress of the European Clinical Neurosychopharmacological College (ECNP) in Lisbon on 2-5 October and has been the group's priority project since it was established in 2018.

A study by researchers from Hospital del Mar, the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute and Hospital Son Espases, shows that the combination of a new antibiotic, ceftazidime/avibactam, with other antibiotics, can treat infections caused by variants of Pseudonomas aeruginosa that are resistant to all existing treatments. The study, published in Microbiology Spectrum, involved an in vitro analysis of the efficacy of the different treatments and their combinations to determine their effectiveness against variants of this bacterium, which is resistant to all existing drugs. Resistance to antibiotics has been identified by the World Health Organisation as one of the main threats to global health. Infection with Pseudomonas aeruginosa can cause pneumonia, heart problems and sepsis, especially in immunocompromised people

Levels of omega-3 fatty acids in the blood are as good a predictor of mortality from any cause as smoking, according to a study involving the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute (IMIM), in collaboration with The Fatty Acid Research Institute in the United States and several universities in the United States and Canada. The study, published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, used data from a long-term study group, the Framingham Offspring Cohort, which has been monitoring residents of this Massachusetts town, in the United States, since 1971. Researchers have found that omega-3 levels in blood erythrocytes (the so-called red blood cells) are very good mortality risk predictors.
Two professionals from the Laboratory will travel to the Japanese capital to support the anti-doping work that will take place during the Olympic Games, which begin on July 23. The Hospital del Mar Institute for Medical Research (IMIM) will once again be Olympic. Two of the Anti-Doping Laboratory of Catalonia professionals at IMIM will work at the Olympic Games Laboratory in Tokyo, which starts this July 23. Sergi Coll and Lídia Requena will travel to Tokyo to work there until August 10. Sergi Coll specializes in detecting anabolic steroids, and Lídia Requena specializes in detecting hormones (erythropoietin, growth hormone ...) and blood transfusions.

6.4% of the European population suffers from depression, according to a study published in The Lancet Public Health. The work was led by researchers from King's College London, the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute (IMIM), the Parc de Recerca Sant Joan de Déu-Institut de Recerca Sant Joan de Déu, the Institute of Biomedicine at the University of León (IBIOMED), and the CIBER on Epidemiology and Public Health (CIBERESP). This figure is higher than that estimated by the World Health Organisation (WHO), which calculated the prevalence of this pathology in the European region at 4.2%. Depression is considered to be one of the leading causes of disability around the world, increasing the risk of premature death, decreasing quality of life and being a heavy burden on health systems. In fact, it is estimated that it may affect more than 300 million people worldwide.

The Jury of the Àngel Prize for Occupational Medicine 2021 has awarded the Prize convened by the Catalan Association of Occupational Health to Dr. Consol Serra Pujadas, in recognition of her dedication to defending health of working people. Consol Serra is the coordinator of the University Pompeu Fabra (UPF) and Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute (IMIM) Center for research in Occupational Health, Head of the Occupational Health Service of the PSMar and Head of Studies of the "Mateu Orfila-UPF" Occupational Medicine Teaching Unit. The award ceremony will take place on June 15, during the General Assembly of members of the Catalan Association of Occupational Health

Researcher Camille Lassale from the IMIM Cardiovascular Epidemiology and Genetics Research Group has obtained one of the 15 "Junior Leader Fellowship - Retaining" grants from the La Caixa Foundation to study the impact of nutrition on epigenetic markers. This call is very competitive; of the 399 applications received, only 15 researches have been awarded throughout Spain and Portugal, and of these 15, there are only four women. The Junior Leader Fellowships postdoctoral research program aims to hire excellent researchers of any nationality who wish to continue their research career in Spain or Portugal. The objectives of this program are to promote innovative and high-quality research in Spain and Portugal and support the best scientific talent by providing them with a competitive and attractive environment in which to conduct excellent research.

Dr. Antonio García de Herreros, a researcher at the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute (IMIM) and professor in the Department of Experimental and Health Sciences at Pompeu Fabra University, has joined the Appeals Committee for the Quality Agency of the Catalan University System (AQU Catalunya), the main instrument for promoting and assessing quality in Catalan universities.
