  Eating Disorders are a Public Health Problem that Affect Young Women to a Greater Extent

  

  As part of the European Study of the Epidemiology of Mental Disorders (ESEMeD) and the World Mental Health Survey Initiative (WMH project), researchers from the Municipal Institute for Medical Research (IMIM-Hospital del Mar) have participated in a study to establish the prevalence of the major eating disorders: anorexia, bulimia and binge eating disorder.

  Unemployment, low level of education and living as a couple worsen the perception of social discrimination among individuals with mental disorders

  

  For the first time, researchers from the Municipal Institute of Medical Research (IMIM-Hospital del Mar) have studied, within the international study setting of ESEMeD, how individuals with mental disorders perceive social rejection and how this affects their well-being and the progress of their illness. Individuals with a mental disorder who feel stigmatised have a lower quality of life and more social and work-related limitations than those with a mental disorder who do not feel stigmatised.

  The AECC grants €1,200,000 to a project in which IMIM is participating

  Following the assessment by the National Agency of Evaluation and Prospective Studies (ANEP), the Foundation Board of the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC) approved, on 17 June, the awarding of two grants worth 1,200,000 euros over a period of 5 years to research programmes that jointly coordinate and run a translational research programme.

  Jordi Mestres, editor of Molecular Informatics

  Jordi Mestres, coordinator of the Chemogenomics Laboratory at IMIM-Hospital del Mar, will be one of the 4 editors of the new magazine Molecular Informatics that will be published by Wiley-VCH publishers starting in January 2010.

  HITEA Assembly Meeting 2009

  

  The first assembly meeting of the European Project HITEA (Health Effects of Indoor Pollutants: Integrating microbial, toxicological and epidemiological approaches), will be held at CREAL. Jordi Sunyer and Jan-Paul Zock lead two of the project work packages. In this meeting, what has been done until now will be presented, and a plan for the future will be drawn.

  Barcelona School on Biomedical Informatics

  

  Last week the first Barcelona School on Biomedical Informatics came to a close with a noteworthy success in attendance and achievement of objectives. It was promoted from the Research Unit on Biomedical Informatics and organised in collaboration with the European projects of the 6th BioBridge and QosCosGrid programme and with the network of excellence of the seventh Virtual Physiological Human (VPH) programme, as well as the Spanish Bioinformatics Institute (INB).

  SANCO Project inaugural meeting: the EU contribution to the World Mental Health (WMH) Surveys initiative

  

  On February 3rd and 4th, a group of European experts will lay the foundations for an in-depth analysis of the public health challenges relating to mental disorders in Europe. This is the aim of a project funded by the European Commission’s Directorate General of Public Health and Consumer Affairs (SANCO) and coordinated by IMIM-Hospital del Mar.

  A project to improve knowledge about the behaviour of pharmaceuticals in space, sponsored by IMIM, selected by the European Space Agency

  

  The ABCtr MicroG project was recently selected, from among many other European initiatives, as one of the four best projects to fly with the European Space Agency (ESA) this October on its 51st campaign of parabolic flights as part of the “Fly your Thesis!” project. This project offers PhD and master’s degree students the opportunity to design, build and carry out a scientific experiment in microgravity.

• 17 November 2008 - General information

  The European Project on Policy Information Research for Mental Disorders EPREMED was finalized

  

  Coordinated by URSS and funded by DG Sanco, the EPREMED project contributed to the improvement of mental health policy information in Europe through the in-depth analysis of the prevalence, risk factors, burden and service use of individuals with mental disorders.
