Initial data from this European programme, which is being carried out in Santa Coloma de Gramenet and in the Sant Martí district of Barcelona, indicate that nearly 33% of participating women have received a diagnosis of depression, compared with 20% in the case of men. The European MENTBEST project, which is being carried out in Santa Coloma de Gramenet and in the Sant Martí district of Barcelona, has now reached its halfway point after 12 months. The initial data from the study, unique in Spain and being conducted in five European countries, promoted by the European Union, show a higher prevalence of mental health problems in women.
Blocking specific cellular signaling pathways may be an effective approach to treating this type of cutaneous lymphoma. One of its characteristics is its high genetic and molecular heterogeneity, which makes it difficult to find therapeutic targets. Now, a study published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology may help to address this. The Sézary syndrome is a rare and aggressive type of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma that affects the skin. One of its characteristics is its high genetic and molecular heterogeneity. This makes it difficult to identify therapeutic genetic targets to treat it

The Spanish Association for Metastatic Breast Cancer (AECMM) has decided to grant one of the awards in the seventh edition of the M. Chiara Giorgetti Award for research into metastatic breast cancer to a project led by Dr. Toni Celià-Terrassa, a researcher in the Cancer Stem Cells and Metastasis Dynamics Research Group at the Hospital del Mar Research Institute. The project has received the second prize, endowed with €80,000. The award ceremony will take place next June. The project will build on the findings of a recent study by the same research group, published in the journal Cancer Cell. It will analyze the role of the protein TIM-3 in the development of resistance to neoadjuvant chemotherapy and how residual disease may serve as a predictor of metastasis. The expected results are intended to pave the way for the launch of a clinical trial led by the Medical Oncology Department at Hospital del Mar.

Today, 11 February, the Hospital del Mar Research Institute joins the celebration of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, a key date to recognize the fundamental role of women in research and to continue moving towards a more just, diverse, and inclusive science. Despite the progress made, women remain underrepresented in science worldwide: less than one third of all researchers are women. At the Hospital del Mar Research Institute, every day we help advance science, medicine, and health. We are professionals from many different fields who research, care, create, and transform to expand knowledge and improve people's lives.

The use of a standardized protocol significantly reduces headache after lumbar puncture, one of the most common side effects of this procedure, based on the analysis of more than 1,100 punctures. Improving the tolerability of lumbar puncture is key to advancing research in the preclinical stages of Alzheimer's disease and has been made possible thanks to the commitment of volunteers from the ALFA cohort. The study, published in Nature Scientific Reports, involved 724 cognitively healthy adults from the longitudinal ALFA cohort at the BBRC, with the support of the "la Caixa" Foundation.

The Machine of Forgetting is a guide to understanding how memory works and how it defines who we are. Through eleven questions, it explores a wide range of issues, from how we store memories to what makes us human, including the possibility that androids might have feelings. Published by Editorial Ariel, the new book by Dr. Rodrigo Quian Quiroga, neuroscientist at the Hospital del Mar Research Institute and ICREA professor, opens the door to the latest advances in neuroscience and artificial intelligence research, while also establishing parallels with art, philosophy, and football.

The Hospital del Mar Research Institute is participating in two of the projects selected by Barcelona City Council and the "la Caixa" Foundation as part of the 2025 edition of the grants awarded by the two entities to emerging research projects in the fields of health and sustainability. Altogether, the initiatives will receive a total of two million euros in funding. One of the projects (DESODEM-BCN) will analyse social determinants in urban dementia. It will study how socioeconomic position, social infrastructure and air pollution influence dementia symptomatology and biology in Barcelona. The project combines biomedical, social and urban research to identify inequalities in diagnosis and disease progression, with special attention to the pTau217 biomarker. It is led by the August Pi i Sunyer Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBAPS), in collaboration with the Hospital del Mar Research Institute, the Barcelona Urban Research Institute (IDRA) and the Barcelona Public Health Agency (ASPB).
