The European Network of Comprehensive Cancer Centres (EUnetCCC) has designated fourteen Comprehensive Cancer Centres (CCCs) across Spain, representing a significant step towards more coordinated, equitable, and accessible cancer care throughout Europe. In Catalonia, the EU-Designated CCCs are Hospital del Mar and the North Catalonia Comprehensive Oncology Consortium. The other designated centres are CCC Euskadi-Basque Country, Hospital Universitario Regional de Málaga, Hospital Universitario Virgen del Rocío in Seville, Hospital Reina Sofía in Córdoba, CICCAR of Cantabria and La Rioja, Complejo Asistencial Universitario de Salamanca, the Murcia Health Service, Hospital Universitari i Politècnic La Fe in Valencia, the Aragón Comprehensive Oncology Network, ASTUR-CCC in Asturias, the Comprehensive Cancer Centre of Galicia, and Hospital Universitario de Navarra.

The Mar Tech Transfer Academy concluded its first edition on 10 June, looking ahead to future editions. Its sixth session, featuring Jordi Martorell, CEO of Aortyx, celebrated the graduation of the projects that took part in the programme. The initiative was created to serve as a bridge between research and the market through three key pillars: sessions led by experienced professionals sharing expertise in areas such as intellectual property protection, fundraising and industrialisation; the provision of support tools to help researchers maximise the value of their projects; and expert guidance throughout the entire process. Judit Cubedo, Managing Director of Hospital del Mar Research Institute, closed the programme by presenting diplomas to the participating researchers. The session concluded with a final networking and working meeting, maintaining the collaborative spirit of the initiative.

Hospital del Mar Research Institute recently hosted the "Clinical Trials in Horizon Europe: Easier Said Than Done" conference, aimed at supporting research managers across Spain working on European clinical trial projects. The event brought together more than 100 attendees from across Spain, including over 40 participants who attended in person and actively contributed to the discussion. The conference was structured around three round table sessions, encouraging open discussion, exchange of practical experiences and active audience participation on some of the main challenges involved in preparing and implementing clinical trials within Horizon Europe.

The grants will support three research projects in the field of sarcopenia in people with chronic respiratory diseases, the application of phage therapy in lung disease caused by non-tuberculous mycobacteria, and lung cancer screening. The grants will be presented on 6 June during SEPAR's 59th congress. The scientific committee for the SEPAR 2026 grants call has awarded three grants to projects led by professionals from the Hospital del Mar Pneumology Department and researchers from the Hospital del Mar Research Institute (HMRIB). Overall, this grant call from the Sociedad Española de Neurmología y Cirugía Torácica has distributed more than 600,000 euros to promote research.

The Hospital del Mar Research Institute (HMRIB) has appointed Judit Cubedo Ràfols as the new Managing Director of the institution. She took up the position on February 16. Judit Cubedo holds a PhD in Molecular and Cellular Biology and has a solid professional background combining scientific experience, strategic management, and health innovation. Throughout her career, she has held senior executive roles in biomedical organizations, leading institutional strategies, financial management, national and international competitive funding acquisition, technology transfer, and public-private partnerships.

On 6 February, the XV Winter Olympic Games officially began. This year, the Games are being held in Milan-Cortina, Italy. This is a top-level sporting event that brings together athletes from around the world and mobilises numerous professionals across different fields, including anti-doping control. In this context, four professionals from the Catalonia Anti-Doping Laboratory - Rosa Ventura, Rosalia Ramírez, Deamelys Hernández and Manfred Conjeaud - will travel to Rome to join the Olympic laboratory team responsible for doping controls during the competition. Rosa Ventura will join the management and supervision group overseeing analytical activities, while Rosalia Ramírez, Deamelys Hernández and Manfred Conjeaud will work in the detection of anabolic steroids, one of the key analytical areas in sports anti-doping control.

The Hospital del Mar Research Institute Barcelona (HMRIB) hosted last Wednesday the 28th the inaugural session of the MAR Tech Transfer Academy, a new training programme designed to bring biomedical research closer to the market and to strengthen knowledge transfer and valorisation capabilities. The programme will count with three pillars: experience through a series of interactive sessions, curated tools that will be offered to the researchers and clinicians to help them during the transfer process and expert accompaniment, trough valorisation services.

Hospital del Mar Research Institute (HMRIB) has secured a Singulars grant from the Agència de Gestió d'Ajuts Universitaris i de Recerca (AGAUR), co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the Government of Catalonia, to carry out the project "Development of Advanced and Emerging Therapies at the Hospital del Mar Research Institute". With a total eligible budget of €1.67 million, the project will be implemented between 2026 and 2028 and aims to transform and modernise the Institute's research infrastructure to consolidate its leadership in the development and validation of advanced therapies, particularly in areas such as cell therapies, RNA-based therapies and immunotherapy.
