The project has a budget of €1.67 million and will run for three years.
Hospital del Mar Research Institute (HMRIB) has secured a Singulars grant from the Agència de Gestió d'Ajuts Universitaris i de Recerca (AGAUR), co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the Government of Catalonia, to carry out the project "Development of Advanced and Emerging Therapies at the Hospital del Mar Research Institute".
With a total eligible budget of €1.67 million, the project will be implemented between 2026 and 2028 and aims to transform and modernise the Institute's research infrastructure to consolidate its leadership in the development and validation of advanced therapies, particularly in areas such as cell therapies, RNA-based therapies and immunotherapy.

The project includes the creation of two complementary strategic areas covering the full translational research cycle:
Renovation and expansion of the preclinical research laboratories at the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park (PRBB), equipping them with state-of-the-art technology such as gene-editing platforms, advanced preclinical modelling systems and artificial intelligence tools.
Establishment of a new advanced clinical unit at Hospital del Mar, specifically designed to conduct Phase I and Phase II clinical trials, with high standards for patient safety and monitoring.
According to the Institute's management, "thanks to this funding, the Institute will significantly increase its capacity to develop innovative therapies, facilitate the delivery of complex academic clinical trials, and accelerate the translation of scientific results into clinical practice, with a direct impact on patients and the healthcare system".
AGAUR's Singulars grants are intended to support strategic, distinctive institutional projects with structural impact and a clear leveraging effect on Catalonia's research and innovation ecosystem. The award recognises the robustness of the project submitted by Hospital del Mar Research Institute, as well as its ability to deliver excellent research, attract talent and promote knowledge transfer and the valorisation of results.
"With this funding, Hospital del Mar Research Institute strengthens its commitment to high-impact translational biomedical research, aligned with the challenges of the medicine of the future and with improving the health of society," management concludes.
