Two researchers from the Hospital del Mar Research Institute among the world’s most cited

According to the Highly Cited Researchers 2025 ranking, published by Clarivate, the selected scientists are Dr Jordi Alonso and Dr Joaquim Bellmunt, who once again appear on this list.

The new edition of the Highly Cited Researchers ranking, produced by Clarivate, has selected 6,868 researchers worldwide who have demonstrated significant influence in their research fields over the past eleven years. Two researchers from the Hospital del Mar Research Institute, Dr Jordi Alonso and Dr Joaquim Bellmunt, are once again included in the ranking.

The researchers featured in the ranking work across around sixty countries. The United States leads the list, followed by China and the United Kingdom. Only around ninety of the selected researchers work in institutions in Spain.

Dr Jordi Alonso, Coordinator of the Health Services Research Group, Professor of Public Health at Pompeu Fabra University, and researcher at CIBER in Epidemiology and Public Health (CIBERESP), has been among the most cited researchers since 2016, in recent years within the interdisciplinary research category. He has been cited nearly 110,000 times and has published around 800 studies during the period assessed.

Dr Joaquim Bellmunt, Coordinator of the Urologic Cancer Research Group and included in the list for his position at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in the United States, has been cited around 50,000 times and has contributed to about one thousand publications. He first entered the list in 2020, always in the field of clinical medical research.

The Highly Cited Researchers list recognises the top 1% of most cited researchers in their field. Filters are applied to avoid hyper-prolific authors and excessive self-citations.
