18/11/2025 - General information
In total, this charitable initiative will fund 36 research projects involving sixty research teams. Those led by the HMRIB will receive a total of 600,000 euros.
Solidarity, through La Marató de 3Cat, continues to drive research. The 10 million euros raised in the latest edition, dedicated to respiratory diseases, will be used to fund 36 research projects from sixty research groups. Among them are two projects led by researchers from the Hospital del Mar Research Institute and Hospital del Mar.
One of the projects, led by Dr. Joan Ramon Masclans, head of the Intensive Care Medicine Service at Hospital del Mar and coordinator of the Critical Illness Research Group at the HMRIB, will focus on predicting treatment response in patients with acute hypoxemic respiratory failure treated with high-flow nasal cannula, using omics and clinical data. To do so, they will receive nearly 300,000 euros. The project also involves the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC).

The other initiative funded by La Marató is led by Dr. Diego Rodríguez, head of the Pulmonology Service and researcher in the HMRIB's Myogenesis, Inflammation and Muscle Function Research Group. In this case, they will study exercise-induced laryngeal obstruction in children and adolescents with exercise-induced dyspnea. The goal is to move from understanding prevalence and characterization to improving diagnosis through respiratory acoustic analysis enhanced by artificial intelligence. The project will also involve IBEC and will receive 300,000 euros from La Marató.
Advancing research on high-impact diseases
The projects funded by La Marató de 3Cat aim to advance the diagnosis and treatment of respiratory diseases, and especially to improve and deepen knowledge on prevention for these conditions-many of which still have no cure. As summarized by the director of the La Marató Foundation, Lluís Bernabé: "In Catalonia, two million people do not breathe to live, but live to breathe, because they cannot do so naturally. Thanks to the donations entrusted to us by society, many of these patients will see improvements in their quality of life and life expectancy through prevention, faster diagnoses, and more effective treatments."
