OPEN PRBB 2025: On Saturday, October 4, we open our doors again!

On October 4, from 10:00 to 14:30 h, a new edition of the Open Day at the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park (PRBB) will take place, where researchers will explain first-hand what they do, how they do it, and where they do it. Come and discover a major scientific infrastructure where the different research centers that are part of the PRBB will offer a wide variety of free activities for the whole family.

During Saturday morning, visitors will be able to learn about science from its protagonists with guided tours. We have prepared several routes that will simultaneously go through the building and visit different laboratories.

In the case of researchers from the Hospital del Mar Research Institute, their laboratories will take part in 5 of the 13 routes scheduled this year, as well as in 3 activities in the square and two science-in-the-open-air talks.

Our laboratories and the routes they participate in:

  • The Clinical Research Unit participates together with the Cognition Biology Laboratory of the UPF in the route "From the laboratory to the patient: exploring new therapies for intellectual disability" where you will discover how basic and translational research paves the way to develop an innovative treatment for people with intellectual disabilities (Down syndrome and Fragile X). Join us to explore the full process, from molecular biology, histology, and mouse studies to clinical application.

  • The Stem Cells and Cancer Laboratory, together with the Cytometry Service of the UPF, will participate in the route "Journey to the center of a cell: from stem cells to cancer". They will show us, on the one hand, the specialized machinery to analyze everything inside a cell, molecule by molecule, and on the other, we will learn how cancer copies the mechanisms of stem cells in order to perpetuate itself.

  • The Applied Metabolomics Laboratory, together with the Dynamic Systems Biology Laboratory of the UPF, will participate in the route "Studying the dynamics of living systems and their metabolome". On the one hand, they will explain how they study and characterize the dynamics of living systems to understand how we adapt to a changing and unpredictable world, and on the other, how measuring certain substances (metabolites) can give clues about health and well-being.

  • With the Translational Research Laboratory in Tumor Microenvironment, together with the Genomics Service of the CRG, we will learn more about colon cancer and how these two laboratories contribute to scientific progress. Come and join the route "Genomics and tumors".

  • The Drug Discovery Laboratory based on G protein-coupled receptors, together with the Cancer Biology Laboratory of the UPF, participate in the route "Organoids for cancer and GPCR drugs", where we will delve into the world of organoid culture to study cancer biology and learn how GPCR receptors are involved in practically everything in our body.

Activities in the square and workshops:

REGICOR Study: Lifestyles and your cardiovascular health. Do you have healthy habits? Do you keep fit? Do you follow a Mediterranean diet? With researchers from the Cardiovascular Epidemiology and Genetics group, the Cardiovascular Risk and Nutrition group, and the REGICOR (Gironí Heart Registry), we will calculate your risk of suffering a coronary disease in the next 10 years and what you can do to prevent it.

The Gene Race An interactive game for young people and families to understand how genetics and lifestyle habits (diet, exercise, alcohol, tobacco) influence health and life expectancy. Activity framed within the LIGHT project developed at HMRIB thanks to the Marie Curie grant.

Science in the open air: short 10-15 min talks taking place in the inner square.

This Open Day, aimed at the whole public, is possible thanks to the participation of nearly 200 volunteers from the different PRBB centers. Our gratitude to all of them.

Don't miss the Open PRBB! We look forward to seeing you!
