Dr Anna Bigas joins the Board of Trustees of the Scientific Foundation of the Spanish Association Against Cancer

She joins a select group of scientists who contribute to the foundation's decision-making.

Dr Anna Bigas, head of the Stem Cells and Cancer Group at the Hospital del Mar Research Institute and the Josep Carreras Leukaemia Research Institute, has joined the Board of Trustees of the Scientific Foundation of the Spanish Association Against Cancer as a scientific trustee. Her appointment took effect at the foundation's Board meeting held in Madrid on 17 September.

Dr Bigas joins a select group of scientists who help guide the foundation's decisions regarding the selection of projects for funding and the definition of its main research priorities. "It is an honour to contribute to ensuring that cancer research is the best it can be," she explains. "Joining this Board of Trustees gives me the opportunity to draw on my experience as a researcher to help support high-quality cancer science and ensure that it reaches patients sooner," she adds.

Dr Bigas's research focuses on the mechanisms that regulate both normal and leukaemic stem cells and on how the latter develop resistance to chemotherapy. She is currently conducting research aimed at producing healthy stem cells for bone marrow transplants and understanding the molecular mechanisms that cause relapse in patients with leukaemia.
