The Pasqual Maragall Foundation will fund a project led by Dr Manuel Valero

The project has been selected as part of the Pasqual Maragall Researchers Programme 2025. The proposal aims to investigate a precision therapy designed to restore the brain circuits affected by Alzheimer's disease.

The ReTune-AD project, led by Dr Manuel Valero, coordinator of the Neural Computation Laboratory at the Hospital del Mar Research Institute (HMRIB), in collaboration with Dr Javier Márquez-Ruiz from Pablo de Olavide University, has been selected to receive funding through the Pasqual Maragall Researchers Programme 2025, organised by the Pasqual Maragall Foundation. The research will receive up to €800,000 in funding to support its progress.

The programme funds research projects of excellence focusing on Alzheimer's disease and other age-related neurodegenerative diseases.

Retuning brain circuits

ReTune-AD is based on the premise that, even before Alzheimer's disease damages neurons, it causes the loss of connections between the brain cells that coordinate brain activity. The project will use advanced simulation tools to identify which cellular networks lose their connectivity. The researchers will then attempt to retune these networks in animal models using targeted, non-invasive electrical stimulation techniques. Through this approach, they aim to design personalised treatments to protect brain function.
