Hospital del Mar Research Institute obtains international ISO 56001:2024 certification for excellence in innovation management

Hospital del Mar Research Institute has obtained international ISO 56001:2024 certification, the benchmark standard for innovation management systems, which recognises the Institute's excellence in identifying, developing and managing innovative initiatives. This recognition places the Institute among the organisations with an innovation management system aligned with international standards. With this certification, the Institute strengthens its position as a centre committed to structured innovation aimed at generating value for patients, the healthcare system and society.

The certification was achieved following an implementation and assessment process that validated the procedures, methodologies and tools used to foster innovation and transform scientific knowledge into solutions with an impact on society. The system implemented makes it possible to identify opportunities, promote new ideas, develop innovative projects and assess their impact in a structured and continuous way. It should be noted that Hospital del Mar Research Institute (HMRIB) already held UNE 166002 certification in R&D&I management. Obtaining ISO 56001:2024 represents a step forward in this trajectory, adapting the management system to new international standards and reinforcing a more strategic, cross-cutting model of innovation focused on generating impact.

HMRIB's Managing Director, Judit Cubedo, highlights that "this certification reflects the institutional commitment to a way of working based on continuous improvement. Having an internationally recognised innovation management system allows us to strengthen our capacity to turn research into results that generate a real impact on health and society". Obtaining this certification reinforces Hospital del Mar Research Institute's commitment to continuous improvement, excellence in management and responsible innovation, helping to consolidate a culture focused on generating value from biomedical research. As this international standard highlights, having a consolidated innovation management system facilitates the identification of new opportunities and strengthens organisations' capacity to generate impact and establish new collaborations.

In this regard, Antoni Gilabert, Director of Innovation at HMRIB, points out that "ISO 56001:2024 goes beyond certification. It allows us to consolidate our own innovation management model, which integrates transfer and innovation adoption as parts of the same process. This model is based on the coordination of specialised teams and functional units that work transversally to ensure that ideas are transformed into valuable solutions and effectively reach the healthcare system and society".

For his part, Ismael Ávila, Head of the Institute's Impact Department, explains that "the implementation of the standard has allowed us to establish common processes and standardised systems that ensure the traceability of all innovation initiatives throughout their valorisation cycle. This facilitates more structured dialogue with research teams, enables continuous monitoring of each project and provides consistent support based on shared criteria, improving both decision-making and the capacity to generate impact".

With this accreditation, Hospital del Mar Research Institute consolidates its commitment to transforming knowledge into tangible results that help improve the health and well-being of society. This recognition also strengthens the Institute's alignment with the new policies of the main research funding and assessment bodies, which increasingly attach greater importance to the capacity to demonstrate the impact of innovation and research beyond scientific publications.
