02/07/26 - General information
The project involves the launch of IAM-CAT, an integrated registry of acute myocardial infarction that aims to improve planning and epidemiological surveillance, quality of care and research in cardiovascular health.
The IAM-CAT project, led by the Hospital del Mar Research Institute (HMRIB) and Hospital del Mar, has received the Bronze Award at the National Health System (SNS) Good Practices Conference, held on 9 June. The conference aims to identify and disseminate good practices that contribute to the sustainability of the SNS through the exchange of experiences and knowledge transfer among the health services of Spain's autonomous communities.
The project was awarded in the SNS cardiovascular health strategy category. It is coordinated by Dr Jaume Marrugat, coordinator of the Girona Heart Registry Research Group (REGICOR); Dr Helena Tizón, HMRIB researcher and consultant physician in the Cardiology Department at Hospital del Mar; and Isaac Subirana and Anna Camps Vilaró, also researchers at HMRIB and in the CIBER Cardiovascular Diseases area (CIBERCV).
IAM-CAT is an evolution of the Heart Attack Code, the protocol activated when an acute myocardial infarction is detected in order to provide the person affected with the best specialised care. Drawing on the experience accumulated, the standardisation of existing information systems and the data integration capacities of the PADRIS programme, IAM-CAT aims to create a comprehensive and sustainable population-based registry covering all cases of acute myocardial infarction recorded in Catalonia.
The algorithms developed make it possible to determine two indicators of great importance for planning healthcare services dedicated to coronary disease: its annual incidence and the proportion of patients who die suddenly from this cause before reaching hospital. All this is recorded by sex and across different territorial levels, ranging from the entire territory to Catalonia's largest towns and cities and rural areas.
The aim of this standardised method is to analyse trends in both indicators over recent decades, integrating all available information into a single platform aligned with the successful models used in northern European countries.
