Success of the “Clinical Trials in Horizon Europe, Easier Said than Done” Conference.

Hospital del Mar Research Institute recently hosted the "Clinical Trials in Horizon Europe: Easier Said Than Done" conference, aimed at supporting research managers across Spain working on European clinical trial projects. The event brought together more than 100 attendees from across Spain, including over 40 participants who attended in person and actively contributed to the discussion.

The conference was structured around three round table sessions, encouraging open discussion, exchange of practical experiences and active audience participation on some of the main challenges involved in preparing and implementing clinical trials within Horizon Europe.

The first session, "Gestión del presupuesto en ensayos clínicos: reclutamiento, plazos y costes en un entorno de incertidumbre", focused on how to build realistic and flexible budgets for clinical trials, particularly when recruitment, timelines and site costs are uncertain. Speakers also addressed financial reporting, payments to clinical sites, sponsor-site responsibilities and the implications of lump sum funding models for clinical trial projects.

The second session, "Integración de socios clínicos: diseño del consorcio y coordinación de centros", explored how to design strong and operationally realistic consortia for clinical trials, including the role of clinical research networks, governance structures, country-level coordination and mitigation measures for challenges such as recruitment delays or limited partner engagement.

The final session, "De la aprobación ética a los contratos con los centros clínicos: cómo abordar la complejidad regulatoria en Horizon Europe", addressed regulatory and administrative complexity in multi-country clinical trials, including ethics approvals, GDPR alignment, clinical annex preparation, sponsor responsibilities, national regulatory differences, documentation requirements and the potential support of platforms such as ECRIN.

Overall, the event was a resounding success, bringing together research managers from more than 40 institutes across Spain. Feedback from the post-event survey was highly positive: 100% of respondents rated the organisation as good to excellent, and 88% found the conference useful or very useful for their work.

The event was organised by the Servei de Recerca Office and would like to thank everyone who took part for making this conference a success and for bringing together and supporting research managers in Spain.
