The awards were presented at the 43rd Pneumological Day, held in Sabadell, in the Vallès Occidental, from April 16 to 18. The winning project analyzes the clinical benefits of an oscillating positive expiratory pressure device in patients with bronchiectasis.
A study led by the Bronchiectasis Unit of the Pneumology Department at the Hospital del Mar has won two awards at the Pneumological Day organized by the Societat Catalana de Pneumologia (SOCAP). The awards include the second prize in the Nursing and/or Respiratory Physiotherapy Area and the third-best presentation in the Basic Research in Pneumology Session. Both awards were received by Marina Sáinz, a nurse at the unit and part of the Research Group on Muscular Wasting and Cachexia in Chronic Respiratory Diseases and Lung Cancer at the Hospital del Mar Research Institute.
The study presented the preliminary results of the AEROBIKA project, a randomized, open-label clinical trial analyzing the benefits of the Aerobika® device from the Canadian company Trudell Medical International in patients with bronchiectasis. This device uses oscillating positive expiratory pressure, creating a positive pressure in the airway that helps dissolve mucus and facilitates easier expectoration.
The researchers presented the results from the first three months of the trial, which will last for one year. Their intention is to follow 64 patients, 32 of whom will use the device. So far, a significant improvement has been observed in the anxiety levels of the users, as well as in dyspnea and their quality of life.
The team believes the results could promote the prescription of this device to treat bronchiectasis symptoms and include it in clinical guidelines. In addition to Marina Sáinz, the study is signed by Maria Cinta Cumplí-Gargallo, Sheila Wang, David Sydor, Jason Sugget, and Esther Barreiro.
